Dr. David S. Kwon, MD, FACS, FSSO is a board-certified general surgeon and fellowship-trained surgical oncologist at Henry Ford Health. He serves as Physician in Charge of the Brigitte Harris Cancer Pavilion and Clinical Director of the Henry Ford Pancreatic Cancer Center.
Clinical expertise
Pancreatic, gastric and rare cancers. Complex foregut and hepatopancreatobiliary surgery. HIPEC and cytoreductive surgery for peritoneal surface malignancies. Precision medicine and multidisciplinary cancer management.
Research and innovation
His research focuses on pancreatic cancer detection, disparities, and advanced local therapies — including molecular and spatial phenotyping, immune checkpoint targets such as TIGIT, and artificial intelligence for imaging-based cancer detection. Recent work spans margin accentuation with intraoperative irreversible electroporation, neoadjuvant versus adjuvant therapy outcomes in resectable PDAC, single-cell racial disparity studies, and deep learning for pancreatic tumor diagnosis.
Training
B.S. in Biological Sciences from Columbia University, MD from the University of California San Diego, general surgery residency at Henry Ford Hospital, and a surgical oncology fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He returned to Henry Ford in 2011, became Division Head of Surgical Oncology in 2015, and was named Clinical Director of the Pancreatic Cancer Center in 2020.
